Rivertrip Series

25 in series

Drawing 10 from Rita Deanin Abbey's "Rivertrip Series." A burst of color in a diagonal flow of yellow, upset by explosions of blues, greens, and red watercolors. Black watercolor, pen-like strokes give order to the scene.

In 1971, I took a raft trip through Cataract Canyon on the Colorado River.  I developed a narrative poem and a series of twenty-five watercolors and drawings based on this experience, which was published in 1977.

The Rivertrip Series provides a visual and literary diary of Abbey’s experiences on a six-day raft trip on the Colorado River. Abbey’s emotional responses to the natural environment are recorded in these highly expressive works. While small in scale, they are packed with explosive expression; using texture, line, and color, she has effectively captured the spirit of the river and canyon.
