Texture Series

6 on display, 7 in series

In this series Abbey explored textured surfaces, producing the Texture Series. The surface of the canvases were built-up to achieve earth-like textures using the application of acrylic paint, sand, and sawdust mixed with polymer gloss medium.

With highly textured surfaces suggestive of geological processes and forms, and with precise use of color, the paintings acquire a sense of earth’s tension, movement, and contour. Her eagerness to explore new materials continued to foster experimentation with textures. Restricted hues mixed with sand, sawdust, and earth created flowing planes of textured surfaces.

Series Highlights

Arroyo, from Rita Deanin Abbey's Texture Series. The background of the piece is gray and textured with a few guiding lines. The focal point of the piece are blue, white, and gray lines that form a stream of powerful, flowing water. The lines bordering this flow are darker shades of gray, brown, black, purple, and blue that emphasis the water and guide the viewer to the center of the piece.

Magma, from Rita Deanin Abbey's Texture Series. A black, textured background with a strip of gray textured background at the bottom of the piece. Loosely v-shaped lines spread across the canvas, each with layers and lines of paint colors ranging from red, orange, blue, purple, and tan. This creates a contrast from the dark back grounds.

Vertical piece with a dark green edge that frames a light green edge. The center of the piece is four horizontal, organically shaped rectangles, each divided by streams of blue, creating "islands."
